My fiance just bought a toshiba gigabeat mp3 player. He formatted the thing and now it says no hard drive.?

Can it be fixed? How can we make it work again???

Go to the web site that makes the product, and browse through the Support section. Look for entries that specifically refer to (a) the error message you’re receiving, (b) the word “format”, and (c) something along the lines of “how do I clear and reset my unit”?

The reason the gigabeat is saying “no hard drive” is most likely because your fiance formatted it using the formatting tools in Windows (or whatever OS you’re using), and like many other mp3 players the gigabeat requires a specific (and likely proprietary) file format to function. Odds are your fiance formatted it with the wrong file format — but more importantly, it is likely that there is *no way* to format it using an OS’s formatting tools, and you’ll have to obtain a software tool (from the manufacturer’s web site, or from the disk that came with the unit) to properly reset/reformat it.

Worst case, you’ll have to send it back to have it done.

Incidentally, in the future don’t bother to format something like this unless instructed to do so by a service rep; instead, you’ll either find an option in the menus to delete and reset the unit, or the unit doesn’t need reformatting and you should simply clear off the unwanted files using the device’s menu options.
