How to recover files from corrupt hard drive the best way?
I just now lost all my data on my corrupt external hard drive which had about 40gb of mp3 files. Please tell me how can I get it back the BEST way? I also want to make sure it has the file names when it recovers them, I don’t want to have to rename them all over again. That’s A real Pain.. Please Help! P.s. Please tell me software names or something, i don’t want to send it to a company and make them fix it. Thank You
What i mean by corrupt is, XP can recognize it in my computer but it wants me to format it every time i click into it. Also it shows 2 of the same hard drive?

1) Long file names are not stored by the operating system, the are stored in each individual file to prevent this exact thing from happening. This was fixed with Windows XP. If you have Windows 98 or earlier, chances are you’ll have to rename.
2) The most common issue with externals is the power supply. Try buying an enclosure, removing the actuall HD from its built in case, and connect it to a 3.5 enclosure. This will allow you to connect it via USB again, circumventing the builtin case/power supply.
3) Please be specific when you say “corrupt.” in order to recommend software. Is it recognizable? Does it show in “My Computer?” Is there any error message on the screen? USB or Firewire? etc. . ..
